Vamos! Ven a ser voluntario!

A couple of years ago two friends in Madrid (Warren and Karen Batt) were telling me that they wanted to launch a program to help the disadvantaged. They did this at a time when Spain was mired in recession and the market for Warren’s excellent wooden furniture dried up. They set up Serve The City Madrid. The program recruits volunteers to work on practical projects. In 2014 they spent €11,700 on 97 projects, 647 volunteers helped 1,489 people. This month their projects include football for the socially excluded, distribution of sandwiches and coffee to the homeless and a gymkana for the physically disabled. They fix houses, paint and plaster. The community amongst the volunteers is great. Hats off to Warren and Karen! They do it all in Spanish as well. If you live in Madrid, or are visiting, then maybe you can help. Website is www.stcmadrid.com or you can follow Serve The City Madrid on Facebook.
