Bless Him

It’s tragic to watch a spokesperson defend the indefensible. The guy from the betting industry this time, trying to defend high stake machines in betting shops. Jobs, tax revenue and, hilariously, arguing that they prevent grotty amusement shops on the high street. Never mind family breakdown and main damage amongst poorer people. Tobacco industry re-run.

I’ve written about it before, but I want everyone to be clear. Consumer goods companies have one primary goal, which is to maximise shareholder return from selling their products. They use language like this, to allay any fears:

‘Eat as part of a balanced diet’, ‘Combine with regular exercise’ etc.

Read an annual report or attend a marketing meeting, and you will see how these companies want to maximise your consumption. My favourite is Coca-Cola’s share of stomach goals. KFC talk about share of dining opportunities. If these businesses were serious about health, they would totally refocus their activities.

I’ve put my twitter feed on the Welcome page of this blog. I am enjoying using it. Follow me, and you can see what I care about. Some laughs too.

You may know that our wonderful Steiner school was issued with withdrawal of operating license. Huge efforts to keep it open, which I know will be successful. Thanks everyone.

Thanks the people who sponsored the Lyke Wake walkers, and to the walkers, for raising money for us. It paid for Jane, Valentina and Sebastian to go to Norfolk for a few days, and for me to get out.
