Lock no. 68

‘Hawking reveals how we could reach Mars in less than an HOUR and Pluto in days.’ Such was a headline in today’s Daily Mirror. According to Professor Our Stevie, we’ll do it by riding in nanocraft at the speed of light. ‘Knowlman reveals how the number 500 bus could get from Watford to Berkhampstead in less than an HOUR and Aylesbury in days.’ According to me, we’ll do it by building a bus lane at the M25 junction, eliminating on-street parking in Kings Langley and by constructing a flyover in Apsley. Maybe MND gives you right to come up with all sorts of crackpot ideas.

Lock number 68, Nash Mills, Grand Union Canal. Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been there several times. Jane and I spent two hours there today. 10 celcius, blue sky, water pouring through the lock, Autumn colours. Perfect. The Gade river joins the canal for this section, and the flow is maintained with bypass channels and opening the sluices a little. Thousands of people once worked in the paper factories of the area, there partly because of the Gade.

A few weeks ago, Woody and Sarah arranged a fantastic barge trip for us. Thanks. Great to sit for four hours on the bow, as we travelled to Hemel in the fresh, damp air. Sebastian of course enjoyed steering this gigantic vessel. Valentina and Jay were able lock openers.

We had a laugh when the consultant read out the side effects of the latest overheating drug. ‘Can lead to muscle weakness and impaired speech.’ I never write about the quarterly appointments, but I do like how the team are upfront about what they do and don’t know. Thanks to Lisa and Pippa for coming. Marta drove the van, so trip was seven rather than 13 hours with hospital transport.

Despite three defeats in a row for the Hornets, and a 16 point deficit versus Manchester City, I am still confident that my bet on Watford to win the premier league will come off.

Last but not least, a photo of Die Kleine Backstube from Surrey! Thank you Gillian!
