Can you really live without it?

We made the decision ten years ago not to have a TV in the house. Our kids, now 12 & 8, have barely watched any children’s TV. As parents we have of course made many decisions affecting our children; without doubt this was one of the best of them.

There are many arguments in favour of TV, but the one against wins every time.

Amazing things happen when there is no TV. Kids get bored, kids have to try a little harder to find things to do. Kids don’t get caught up in celebrity culture.

How can your kids be normal? How can they integrate into the ‘real world’? Don’t they miss out? Well, everyone I know thinks our kids are perfectly normal, they are in the real world and they do not miss out.

My son watches golf highlights on the iPad and my daughter watches a few wildlife DVDs on the laptop. That’s it.

Ditch the TV(s); trust me, it will be one of the best things you ever do.

  1. Having no children and therefore I am not very qualified to answer this question but I think Andrew and Jane are very brave with this “no TV” plan.
It must be so easy to turn the TV on in order to get some relief from your children. Of course there are many good children’s television programs if you can control the watching of other rubbish around it. David Attenborough material for example but as you say that can be done on-line. Actually any of programs on any channels can be seen on-line and probably easier to control or “vet”.
As I say I am not qualified to answer the question/challenge

Just a question Andrew – does the same apply to radio?
And at what age do you think you will need to change the TV policy ?
And finally how different do you think it will help parenting at the “teenage change over at 13 ” to manage that teenage communication explosion!

As an adult, I love some TV as nobody talks back at my wise ass comments………..
