I joined the Green Party

Throughout my working life I was told that I did not think strategically enough. ‘You are good at detail, Andrew, but sometimes you miss the big picture’.

I remember a training course at Procter & Gamble, where they talked about doing the wrong things right and doing the right things right. They said many people spend time doing the wrong things, but they do it the right way. Much better to work on the right things. How true.

How will people in two hundred years judge the decisions we make now? What will they about what was important to us? Will they say that we focussed on the important things? Did we think strategically? Did we work on the right things, or on the wrong things?

Will they care whether the UK admitted a few Romanian immigrants in 2015? Will they care if Labour said the top rate of tax should be 50% and the Conservatives said it should be 40%? People, these are details!

People in 200 years will judge our generation on whether we tackle the most strategic issue there is, namely how do we tackle climate change?

Looking back to the 1980s when the German Green Party’s efforts resulted in recycling and the introduction of the Green Dot scheme for packaging, the Greens have consistently been the only champions of environmental issues and latterly climate change. This remains true today.

So, I decided to think strategically and pay £2.60 per month and become a member of the Greens. I want to ensure that people understand that the current selfish, greed-based model is unsustainable.  I believe my grandchildren will say that I did the right thing right.

It does not matter that I don’t agree with every Green policy. This is a statement on the number one issue facing the planet.

  1. Never saw it that way. At a time when I have become so sceptical about all things political (and politicians) on both sides of the spectrum, you’ve just given me a reason to vote again. Thanks for that Andrew.
