How does modern society view women (or men) who stay at home to look after their children? How do working women view those women who stay at home to look after their children? How dare a man even dream to write about such a thing and express an opinion?
When Valentina was born thirteen years ago we took the decision that Jane would be a full-time mum. In fact, I am not sure we took the decision; it’s what we did. Ever since then she has dedicated herself to the children and to me. People tell us we have good children and I know this is a result of what Jane has done and does.
‘I need to use my brain’, ‘we need the money’, ‘you are lucky’, ‘I’d get bored’ I am not going to get into the debates. What I will do is thank Jane for doing the ‘hard yards’ (as they say in Australia), for making sure we ate and eat fresh food together as a family, for being there for the kids and me, for having a lovely home, for doing the drudge, for moving around the world, often with very young children; basically for living a selfless life. I am blessed and grateful.
I hope our societies change how we view stay-at-home parents. Not all new ideas are better ideas.
