I have my new passport. Why do I need it? Was it worth £75.50?
The last time I left the UK was in March 2016. Now, there’s no way I can sit in a normal plane seat, as discussed in this . In the next few years, I would be able to leave the UK on the Eurostar to Paris for example, in my van or on a private jet. I don’t have the energy or inclination to do any at the moment. When I do, I’ll have a valid passport.
I had to give back my driving licence in 2015. It was my only form of photo identification apart from the passport. You can see the problem if I had no passport. All continental European countries except Denmark give their citizens an ID Card, and the UK should do the same. If I choose not to have a passport and don’t have a driving licence, it’s difficult to get things done. Never mind that, it makes life easier for ALL citizens.
The UK, like in so many things, does it differently to what works elsewhere. As Basil said to Sybil in Fawlty Towers, ‘You know best dear!’ Sometimes we all need a little totalitarianism.
Of course, the deeper reason for me renewing my passport is hope.
