Watch your prejudices

I am meeting people on this trip with different lifestyles, values and opinions to me. Sometimes I make the quick judgment based on how they live. Guess what? They turn out to be kind, great people. It’s a hell of a lesson.

I slowly drove the powered chair around the residential complex, where I am staying, speaking with my carer for the morning, Carline. It was hot. She talked about running past dying people during the 2010 Haitian earthquake, about raising a family in the U.S. and we listened to Haitian music. It was the first time I got help washing in the shower; as I cried she said ‘there is a first time for everything’. She talked how her belief in Christ keeps her going. She talked, as do many others, about the importance of doing what you can (dressed myself – easier with shorts and T-shirt).

400 men sitting in an enormous church on Monday night at Bible Study Fellowship. Things are different to the UK. The man next to my wheelchair had cerebral palsy and was blind. He could not do 3+4, but he could tell you what day 28 December will be. His dad, massively positive, was an Air Force test pilot and had worked a lot in England.

After BSF I found myself sitting next to the son of man who says he was cured of ALS through his faith in God.

  1. I’m glad you got to Miami and you that you made the effort and are having and sharing these unique experiences, The way I see it is your body has ALS but YOU do not.

  2. Faith and trust in God allows him to influence your life – not always in ways we expect nor in ways which WE think we would like and often things seem very tough. However stick with him and he won’t abandon you! Faith also brings about the most amazing fellowships – your trip out there is testiment to that.
